about Martin Walton

Ballykinlar Camp Orchestra

The men pictured were detainees of Her Majesty's government during the war for Irish independence. From 1921 - 1923 he was interned in Ballykinlar Prison Camp in Co. Down and formed and taught the camp orchestra there. Martin Walton is the bearded man standing on the right of the photograph.

Martin Walton was involved in the movement for Irish independence. He was a member of Na Fianna Eireann and at fifteen years of age took part in the 1916 rising. His knowledge of the streets of Dublin made him a reliable guide and courier between the G.P.O and Jacob's Mill.
